We successfully deployed the HOT profiler yesterday, which proceeded to the charging dock, charged, and left- the first demonstration of an inductively charged moored profiler in the open ocean. After 6 long years of adventures and frustration that featured an Albatrossian series of bad luck including bankrupting a Swedish company, a wire parting, two imploded communications buoys, a 1000-pound sphere bouncing on the deck, a hole in the hull of a ship, and a motor wired backwards, we finally prevailed. We expect the system to profile until December, when we will retrieve it. Thanks to all the hard work and skill of the HOT APL/UW engineering team, Eric Boget, Mike Kenney, Tim McGinnis and Chris Siani, and to Bruce Howe and Roger Lukas at UH, and to the rest of the Wavechasers team for shoreside support. |
